Q 1 Psychoeducational Presentation SWK 6301 Overview In this course, you will be required to complete a PowerPoint presentation for a psychoeducation group that will be provided as an intervention. Group members need to know what to expect and look forward to within the psychoeducation group. Therefore, this PowerPoint would be used during your first week of the intervention with the psychoeducation group to cover the intervention processes, content, policies, and expectations of the group. This assignment is separated in two parts, a midpoint outline of the psychoeducational PowerPoint presentation due in the middle of the term, and then the completed psychoeducational PowerPoint presentation due at the end of the term (check your syllabus for precise due dates and times). This assignment guideline will break down the requirements for each assignment, and the rubrics will be posted below the parts in the Appendix. Part 1: Outline of Psychoeducation Presentation (Due Week 7) For your midpoint assignment, you will create an outline for the PowerPoint presentation due at the end of the term, which will introduce a psychoeducation group that will be provided as an intervention. All that you need to do is create the outline for your final assignment psychoeducational presentation using the following directions. Directions Step One: Selecting a Developmental Group 1. Select a developmental group of interest to you. Make sure it’s a group that is covered in the course. a. Here are some examples that you might use if you choose your own subject. Remember that the intervention should focus on development issues that are common for the age group that you will work with): i. A group for middle school aged, puberty aged girls to provide an opportunity for personal growth, increased self-esteem, and body awareness as they go through the process of puberty. ii. A group for new retirees who are looking to redefine who they are now that they are no longer working a full-time job. 2 iii. A group for new parents to educate them on supporting the development of their new child from birth to age 1. iv. A group for social workers interested in improving their health and wellness and preventing burnout v. A group for young adult LGBTQIA+ couples who plan to get married and want to establish a healthy, happy marriage b. As was described earlier in the semester through the Discussion Board tasks, psychoeducation groups typically encourage the formation of mutual support, education, and networking. Please see Step 2 below for the specifics that should be included in the power point. This will help guide you in creating your outline. 2. Upon selecting the development group of interest, think of what you would want to include for the first week’s presentation as presented in a PowerPoint. The outline is for the 1st week’s PowerPoint of the group, not for the entire psychoeducation group that you are introducing with the PowerPoint. Thus, do not do an outline for eight different weeks of PowerPoints; you only need to do it for the PowerPoint for the 1st week. 3. As this is an outline, you do not need to create the PowerPoint for this assignment. However, when thinking about what you'd include on the outline, think about some of these things: developmental age of the group, the purpose for the group, overarching topic or theme (e.g., parenting, coming out, getting along with others, etc.). 4. Think about possible topics that you would want to cover for this age group? What topics will you cover across the entire psychoeducation group? NOTE: the psychoeducation group will cover an 8-week period (including the 1st week for introductions). Thus, you should include 7-8 topics that might be useful for your age group. NOTE: given that this is an outline, feel free to brainstorm possible topics. You will receive feedback on these topics for the final assignment and will be graded on effort and not on the appropriateness of topics for this assignment. Step Two: Create the outline for the 1st week’s PowerPoint 1. Create an outline that contains the following items: a. Description of the psychoeducation group and the developmental period it focuses on (NOTE: this section will be 2-3 slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). b. The rationale for the group based on developmental issues and research covered in the course (Note: this section will be 4-5 Slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). Given that we are only at the mid-point of the course, 3 you’ll want to brain-storm and glance at the topics this course covers throughout the entire semester. Which ones might you use given the age group and overall topic that you'd like to cover through the psychoeducation intervention? Thus, the Rationale should specifically address: i. What is the purpose of the group? When thinking about this, consider typical issues, concerns, and/or experiences for the age group that the members belong to. 1. When considering the purpose for the group, also remember to consider diversity that is often present in any group, even if all the members are, for example, teen parents, LGBT elders, 5th graders, etc. This diversity can include, although it is not limited to, potential risks (e.g., health disparities, common behavioral health issues, prejudices such as racism, sexism, economic issues, etc.) for the age group. How will your purpose be inclusive? How will you demonstrate this in the outline for the group? 2. Remember also to include strengths already present in the group. What strengths or opportunities might be typical for this age group, and how might you include this in your outline that you will later use for the final assignment? c. Inclusion: Given what is known about the age group you are presenting to (e.g., older children, young adults who are parents of younger children, older retirees, etc.), how you will demonstrate the inclusion of diverse members in the group? Please see the references to inclusion described above. (NOTE: this section will be 1-2 Slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). d. Outline: Wait. Aren't you already doing an outline? Yes, you are! For this assignment, you want to list at least 8 weeks of group topics. Remember that you do not have to do an outline for 8 weeks’ worth of full group topics. Don’t do that! J You only need to list what you plan to present as the topics you want your group to know about at the 1st week of the psychoeducation group. (NOTE: this section will be 2-3 slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). e. Goals: Think about what kinds of goals you might want to work on via the psychoeducation group. When adding these to the outline think about the following: i. What are typical needs for the age group that you will target? ii. Psychoeducation tends to be transparent about its methods, so these are typically included in an introduction for such a group. What kinds of interventions might you use in the group to achieve these goals? Think of three examples of interventions you might use in the group to enhance 4 understanding of the topics covered. Be creative. At this point, there are no "correct" answers, but you will get feedback about the appropriateness of the methods you choose. At this point, you'll be graded more on effort than "correctness”(NOTE: this section will be 3-4 Slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). f. Evaluation: Identify how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your psychoeducation group with the chosen population. Remember that these include the methods that you’ll use to engage members and assess how they are responding. Thus, will you include weekly groups summaries, a project at the end of the 8 weeks, quizzes, homework, etc.? These should be included in the presentation so that members know what to expect. (NOTE: this section will be 2-3 slides in the final assignment's PowerPoint). i. What should the members have learned about the various issues of development? ii. How would you describe and present this in the presentation? Step Three: Grammar and Format 1. You are required to include at least three citations. For the final assignment, you must use at least 8 citations. This does not include text from the Coursework section of each week. It can include course readings. Thus, you can include at least some of these now, so that you have less to do for the final version that you will submit for the final assignment. Step Four: Submission 1. Your presentation must be submitted to the Dropbox area of your course on the due date listed in the Week 1 Checkpoint area, or your syllabus. Rubric for Part One: Outline of Psychoeducational Presentation is located in the below Appendix. See next page for Part 2. 5 Part 2: Psychoeducation Presentation (Due Week 14) Your final assignment is a continuation from your midpoint outline of psychoeducation presentation. For this assignment, you will create an introductory PowerPoint for a psychoeducation group that will be provided as an intervention. By now, you would have already selected your development group and laid out an outline of topics that you'd want to cover for the first eight weeks of a session (the first week included) for a week one PowerPoint presentation. Directions Having your midpoint outline as a foundation, complete the following: Step One: Create a PowerPoint deck. At a minimum, the PowerPoint Presentation must be at least 14 slides. Based on the readings and class discussions/weekly board discussions, it should cover the following areas relative to your chosen developmental group: 1. Description of the psychoeducation group and the developmental period it focuses on (minimum of 2-3 Slides). 2. The rationale for the group based on developmental issues and research covered in this course (minimum of 4-5 Slides). The purpose should focus on one or more specific concerns for the developmental period of group members. Thus, the Rationale should specifically address: a. What is the purpose of the group? When thinking about this, remember to consider what we've learned about the specific developmental period that potential group members belong to. Thus, the purpose should address typical issues, concerns, and/or experiences for the age group that the members belong to. b. When considering the purpose for the group, also remember to include the diversity that is often present in the group, even if all the members are, for example, teen parents, LGBT elders, 5th graders, etc. This diversity can include, although it is not limited to, potential risks (e.g., health disparities, common behavioral health issues, prejudices such as racism, sexism, economic issues, etc.) for the age group. c. Remember also to include strengths already present in the group. What strengths or opportunities might be typical for this age group, and how might you include this in the plan for the 8-week psychoeducation group? Some examples might be: providing opportunities for middle-schoolers to decide a few of the group topics, recently unemployed adults providing lists of resources to 6 each other, older adults creating an oral history of the town to share with the community, etc. 3. Inclusion: Given what is known about the age group you are presenting to (e.g. older children, young adults who are parents of younger children, older retirees, etc.) how you will demonstrate inclusion of diverse members in the group (minimum of 1-2 Slides). 4. Outline: Provide an outline of at least 8 weeks of group topics. You do not have to prepare 8 weeks’ worth of full group topics. Only provide an outline of what would be covered over the following 8 weeks. (minimum of 2-3 Slides). 5. Goals: Identify the psychoeducation goals that you want to achieve given the needs of the group. (minimum of 3-4 slides) a. What is/are the overall goal(s) for the group? b. Provide three examples of interventions you will use in the group to enhance understanding of the topics covered. These can include play therapy, art therapy, CBT exercises, mindful meditation, psychoeducation with Q&A, etc. c. Remember that you will let the group know what these are. Thus, how would you present this to the members of the group given the developmental period that they are in and the purpose of your group? 6. Evaluation: Identify how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your psychoeducation group with the chosen population. Remember that these include the methods that you'll use to engage members and assess how they are responding. Thus, will you include weekly groups summaries, a project at the end of the 8 weeks, quizzes, homework, etc.? These should be included in the presentation so that members know what to expect. (minimum of 2-3 slides) a. What should the members have learned about the various issues of development? b. How would you describe and present this in the presentation? Step Two: Grammar and Format 1. Within your PowerPoint, include a title slide and slides for the bibliography that shows the resources you used to create the psychoeducation course. Neither the title page nor bibliography count towards the minimum number of slide requirements. 2. You must use at least 8 citations. It can consist of course readings and a minimum of three current peer-reviewed journal articles and/or books to substantiate knowledge and understanding of the issues relevant to your chosen population and their psychoeducation needs. a. Do not use Coursework text as a reference! 7 b. The required readings, in addition to your own research, should provide you the kinds of citations you need to support the claims, ideas, or information that you need. 3. Content should be concise and adhere to APA 6th Step Three: Technology and Submission 1. Your presentation must be in a PowerPoint format, with the file name ending in .ppt or .pptx 2. For information on how to download PowerPoint to your desktop, click here: http://office365.osu.edu 3. Your presentation must be submitted to the Dropbox area of your course on the due date listed in the Week 1 Checkpoint area or your syllabus. Rubric for Part Two: Final Psychoeducational Presentation is located in the below Appendix. 8 Appendix Assignment Summary In summary, your final assignment should contain the following elements (note that the number for slides is a minimum). I. Title slide (1 slide) II. Description of the psychoeducation group & developmental period it focuses on (2-3 Slides). III. Rationale & Purpose for the group (4-5 slides) a. The purpose should focus on one or more specific concerns for the developmental period of group members. b. The purpose should also recognize strengths already present for group members (i.e., the purpose is not only deficit based in its focus) IV. Demonstrate the inclusion of diverse group members (1-2 slides) V.
